Job Description

We are seeking a professional, experienced, and highly reliable Unarmed SPO to support the safety and security operations of a private school in Washington, DC. This position is primarily an outdoor post and is not a seated role; the Maryland Guard will be expected to remain on foot for extended periods and conduct regular interval patrols to ensure the safety of the school while providing on-site leadership and oversight to assigned security personnel.

The ideal candidate will have direct experience in a school or educational environment and be well-trained in surveillance, demonstrating excellent judgment, discretion, and the ability to maintain a secure yet welcoming atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors.

Candidates must inspire respect and authority while maintaining professionalism and approachability. Strong observational skills, command presence, keen situational awareness, and the ability to supervise and guide others are essential. The SPO must remain calm, courteous, and effective when managing security matters in an active and dynamic school setting.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and control access to the school campus from an outdoor security post, ensuring only authorized individuals are permitted entry.
  • Perform interval-based foot patrols around designated exterior areas; this is not a seated position, and extended periods of standing and walking are required.
  • Screen all visitors, vendors, and packages using handheld magnetometers, walk-through metal detectors, and x-ray machines to identify prohibited items.
  • Maintain a visible, approachable, and professional security presence across school grounds and building perimeters.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to incidents, emergencies, disturbances, or requests for assistance.
  • Prepare accurate, complete, and timely incident reports, daily activity logs, and other required security documentation.
  • Communicate courteously and effectively with students, staff, parents, and visitors.
  • Work collaboratively with school administrators and, when necessary, coordinate with local law enforcement or emergency responders.
  • Remain attentive and alert during peak traffic hours (arrival and dismissal).
  • Support school safety procedures, emergency drills, and established security protocols.
  • Provide on-site supervision of assigned unarmed security officers, ensuring adherence to post orders, school policies, and company standards.
  • Conduct roll calls, shift briefings, and post assignments as required.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for security-related issues during assigned shifts.
  • Assist with training, onboarding, and orientation of new security officers assigned to the school.
  • Immediately report personnel issues, safety concerns, or policy violations to management.
  • Supervise one or more unarmed security officers during assigned shifts.
  • Ensure adequate post coverage and compliance with scheduling requirements.
  • Lead by example in professionalism, vigilance, and customer service.
  • Support management with incident follow-up and operational feedback.

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience working in a school or educational setting (required).
  • Previous supervisory or lead security experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or GED; additional security training is a plus.
  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • Prior experience in security operations or customer service strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to engage respectfully with children, staff, visitors, and subordinates.
  • Professional appearance, demeanor, and conduct at all times.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and sound decision-making skills.
  • Must pass required background checks, physical exam, and drug screening.
  • Capability to stand, walk, patrol, and remain on post for extended periods.
  • Must possess a valid photo ID and reliable transportation.
  • Must have a working telephone number for communication purposes.
