School Security Officer

Location: Rockford, IL

Schedule: Full-Time | Monday-Friday, day shift (primarily)

Pay Rate: $17/hr

Position Overview

We are seeking dedicated, responsible, and professional School Security Officers to help maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment within a school setting. This role is well-suited for individuals who enjoy working around children or young adults while upholding a high standard of professionalism and safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor and supervise assigned areas to maintain safety and order
• Conduct routine patrols of school buildings, hallways, stairwells, and outdoor grounds
• Secure exterior doors and oversee facility access
• Use a tour-of-duty system to document inspections of key locations
• Assist visitors by providing directions and ensuring compliance with school procedures
• Respond promptly and professionally to staff concerns, incidents, and emergencies
• Maintain a visible presence to deter unauthorized activity and promote a secure environment
• Escort students when needed and support school staff in upholding school policies
• Immediately report security breaches, incidents, or suspicious activity to school administration and supervisors
• Monitor security cameras and surveillance systems
• Operate metal detectors or other weapons detection equipment as required
• Staff access control points and follow established visitor management procedures
• Perform additional duties as assigned by school administration or SMSSI management

Schedule

• Primarily Monday–Friday, daytime shifts
• Variable hourly positions; schedules may be adjusted based on operational needs

Qualifications

• Completion of a 20-hour security training course
• Ability to obtain a valid PERC Card
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Ability to pass a drug screening and background check
• Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English
• Authorized to work in the United States
• Strong observational and problem-solving skills
• Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
• Prior experience in school security or a similar environment preferred (not required)
• Physically capable of standing or walking for extended periods (up to 8–12 hours)
• Able to respond effectively to physical demands during emergencies

Additional Information

School Security Officers report to both school administration and SMSSI management. This role is essential in fostering a secure, positive, and productive learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.
