Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Maintaining control and security of living quarters
  • Instructing and supervising the youth in personal hygiene
  • Counseling youth on personal behavior problems
  • Supervising the housekeeping activities of the youth in and about the facility
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations of Michigan Child Care Institutions and the policies and procedures of the detention facility.
  • Responsible for documentation of activities and behavior; maintaining housekeeping; assisting in the feeding and providing necessary supplies and clothing.
  • Conduct fifteen-minute rounds to ensure safety and security.
  • Inspect conditions of door locks, glass windows, and window grills at the Juvenile Detention Center to ensure security and help prevent escapes.
  • Monitor conduct of residents in housing unit, or during school or recreational activities, according to established policies, regulations, and procedures to prevent violence.
  • Search residents and conduct shakedowns of cells for valuables and contraband, such as weapons or drugs.
  • Maintain records of residents' identification and charges.
  • Keep daily logs of resident activities.
  • Escort Residents to locations within and outside of facility, such as visiting room, courtroom, or airport.
  • Settle disputes between residents Utilizing verbal de-escalation.
  • Serve meals, distribute commissary items, and escort medical staff while dispensing prescribed medication to residents.
  • Provide supervisors with oral and written reports of resident disturbances and rule violations, and unusual occurrences.
  • Participate in required job training.
  • Counsel residents and respond to legitimate questions, concerns, and requests.
  • Issue clothing, toiletries, and other authorized items to residents.

Required Qualifications:

An associate degree or Higher.

A valid drivers license.

OR

A high school diploma or equivalent AND one (1) year of full-time paid experience working in any of the following:  law enforcement, private security, military, education, human services, social services, counseling, or related field. A valid drivers license.
